Health & Safety
Redrow places great emphasis on the importance of Health and Safety and recognises that the wellbeing of all employees and those within the supply chain is essential to our business. We take appropriate actions to comply with Health and Safety best practice and legislation throughout our organisation.
- Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, our dedicated in-house Health and Safety Team monitors compliance with external Health and Safety legislation and the Company’s own standards.
- A clearly defined Health and Safety policy is provided, relating to all our operations, both on development sites and within our offices. All employees receive a copy of our Health, Safety and Environmental Policy on their first day of employment and are required to positively adopt its principles.
- Our Safety Training Credit Scheme (ST-CRED) requires employees to achieve a level of credits set by the Health and Safety Team, to ensure they receive the level of training relevant to their role or function. All Redrow regions achieved the benchmark of 80% compliance with ST-CRED.
- Training is provided to subcontractors through our on-site induction process, toolbox talks and through our Work Safe – Home Safe Campaign, which includes DVDs on four key aspects to reduce accidents on site.
- Specific Health and Safety standards are applicable to all areas of the business, including the safety of customers visiting our sites.
- Compliance with Health and Safety legislation on-site is monitored through regular site visits from our in-house Health and Safety Team.
- The Health & Safety Team provides monthly management reports, including one to the Board on compliance with best practice and the incidence of accidents.
- All persons on site are inducted by Site Management and required to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
- On visiting a site, Directors are required to complete a Health and Safety register.
- A Crisis Management Policy provides clear guidance on how to deal with major incidents. This policy is provided to the appropriate staff at each level of management.
- We are pleased to report that in 2005, each Redrow operating company achieved an International Safety Award from the British Safety Council (BSC). In addition, Redrow received a Silver Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and was one of a small number of house builders to have secured a RoSPA award in 2005.
In 2006 Redrow received a RoSPA Gold award for Occupational Health and Safety.
This continuous improvement over three years, bringing awards of Bronze, Silver and Gold in successive years is a real testament to the commitment and hard work invested across the Group in improving safety standards.
Redrow has also signed the Health and Safety Charter of the Home Builders Federation (HBF). The Charter includes an action plan to:
- Increase consideration of health and safety in design.
- Engage with the supply chain and employees on health and safety issues.
- Increase awareness of occupational health issues.
- Use statistics to target effective improvement on health and safety.
- Protect customers, visitors and neighbours.
- Co-operate with others to develop and promote best practice.
- Promote the Charter and encourage others to share the vision.
Further information on Redrow’s performance and initiatives on Health and Safety can be found in the Health and Safety Annual Report published on our website.
- The total number of accidents (including first aid, no lost time, RIDDOR etc) for 2006/07 was down by 21%. Our Accident Incidence Rate (AIR) was 20% below the Construction Industry rate, a further improvement on the 10% reduction in 2005/06. These statistics include accidents involving subcontractors working on our sites.
- We continue to improve our Accident Potential Rate (the APR is the internal measurement used by the Health and Safety Team to assess sites performance). The Group average APR was 16 for 2003/04; the target we set for 2004/05 was a challenging figure of 10. The Group met this challenge and achieved an average APR of 09.
- In 2005, we launched our “Safe Six” campaign which focuses on the six main hazards on our development sites:
- Work at height
- Pedestrian segregation
- Public protection
- Housekeeping
- Health issues
- Welfare
For each of the above categories we have set “high wire” standards that the sites have to achieve. Sites that achieve these standards in any of the categories are awarded “star” rating. If a site receives 4 stars or more for three consecutive inspections they are presented with a plaque to display on site. Refer to Redrow in Action 2 (Health & Safety – the Safe Six).
- Our Health and Safety Team and Regional businesses are actively involved with the HSE in their Safety Health Awareness Days (SHADs). These are events for SMEs that provide free training and information on all relevant health and safety matters.
