Pioneering Developments

Redrow was one of the foremost of the U.K. major housebuilders to investigate environmentally friendly home design through our involvement in building the ‘House of the Future’ at the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans, Cardiff.

Designed by Justico and Whiles, the home incorporates a host of innovative ideas which promote sustainability, including a ‘green’ roof, micro-processor controlled heating and cooling, ground heat pump technology, waste recycling facilities and excellent thermal insulation provided by sheeps wool.

We welcome the Government’s objectives for improved energy and overall sustainability performance of new homes, as laid out in the Code for Sustainable Homes ( The Code), the successor to BRE EcoHomes.

Through our involvement with leading exponents in this increasingly science based field, such as the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Home Builders Federation, the Welsh Energy Research Centre and NHBC we have shared our experiences to date of using the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) and the Code, contributing to the continued development and evolution of the mechanisms underpinning the Code.

Combining the lessons learned with the skills of our qualified, in-house Code assessment resource has not only assisted us to deliver our first Code level 3 homes , constructed at Cheswick and ‘Vision’ at Devonport, but has also guided improvements to our core Signature range. The SAP rating of our "B" series Signature homes now falls in the range 81-85 (75:2007), putting them into Energy Rating Category "B".
