Redrow in action - CABE Champion
All successful schemes display a distinct identity that intuitively informs the decisions of potential customers. This character and quality of environment engenders a sense of community pride and desirability that ensures long-term sustainability.
The ability of design to create this sense of place is not only reliant upon the buildings but also on the external spaces created by them. This not only demands high quality architecture but also a strong landscape strategy.
The fundamental challenge of the urban designer is to optimize the potential of the available land resource and to create this sense of place in a way that is appreciated and appeals to the customer.
The proposal must respond to its context both in form and style and embrace and exploit the sites natural landscape features and topography. The layout of its streets should provide for all modes of transport, the car movement and parking as well as the pedestrian and cyclist that offers routes that are legible, safe and easy to navigate and offer choice without being allowed to dominate the public realm.
Redrow recognizes the fundamental role of urban design in the delivery of high quality environments and the creation of new communities where our customers will choose to live and be a part of.
Our approach is increasingly open to public and professional critique beyond that of the Local Planning Authorities and must be capable of scrutiny.
In response to the unique challenges and opportunities we intend to establish a specialist Group-wide Urban Design Centre of Excellence based at the South Midlands Company office in Northampton.
The primary role of this team is to support the Redrow Group of Companies with the design and delivery of value adding solutions that exceed the expectations and meet the aspirations of our customers.
It will be responsible for the delivery of urban design proposals of a consistently high quality, that maximize the potential of the site, minimize costs through use of proven products and techniques and reduce delivery times through a proactive professional approach with local communities and Planning Authorities.
This innovative approach will specifically provide:
- the nucleus for committed urban design professionals from within and currently on the periphery of the Industry where they can directly influence the shape of our future communities
- a broad skill base to allow in-house master planning, design code production and provide a consistent instant response to planning and urban design changes and initiatives
- a consistent proactive approach to the engagement of all stakeholders in the delivery of new communities
- direct feedback that will inform the development of the Redrow product
- reinforcement of our commitment to Design as an integral part of the development process that continually informs and in turn is influenced by each function
