House-building Key Impacts

Activity within the house-building industry has wide-ranging influence on the environment, the economy and society in general. Whilst much of this influence is beneficial, we are mindful that any harmful effects must be minimised and we act accordingly to continually improve our product and business process to ensure that this is the case. Key impacts from the house building process can be summarised as follows:

Upstream (Indirect Control)
We recognise that sourcing raw materials for construction and the manufacture and transport of products used in the construction process can be potentially harmful to the environment. We work closely with our supply chain to ensure that this is minimised. Details of how we achieve this are included in the Supplier Relations section.

Our Activities (Direct Control)
Throughout our business process, from the initial land purchase to the handover of a new home to our customer, there are opportunities to improve upon the benefits we already deliver and to reduce harmful impacts.

Land purchase involves the consideration of many environmental, social and economic issues, find out more about these potential impacts and the ways that we manage them in Building Communities for the Future and Protecting our Heritage.

The sustainability of the design of new homes is a key consideration for the industry. Issues such as choice of materials, energy and water efficiency, security, visual aspects and lifetime homes standards are all central to our design process, see Building Communities for the Future for more information.

Developing sustainable communities in which people are proud to live and work involves provision of adequate amenities, protecting the existing heritage and community values, good urban design, provision of open space, density of the development and access to transport links. Redrow’s focus on sustainable community development is outlined in Building Communities for the Future.

Improving the performance of our construction activity to minimise environmental impact involves resource efficiency, waste management, biodiversity, quality, pollution prevention, contaminated land and considerate construction. These key areas are controlled by our Environmental Management Systems; see Environmental Management for more information.

Downstream (Indirect Control)
The way in which our sub-contractors operate can affect our sustainability performance in many ways. We work closely with our sub-contractors to ensure that they meet our expectations and standards, more information can be found in Supplier Relations.

Through considered, high quality design of our developments and our homes, we can promote sustainability and reduce environmental impacts. However, to maximise the available benefits our customers need to be made aware of how to make the best use of their homes, local amenities sand facilities. Find out how we are providing our customers with the necessary information to live more sustainable lives in our Customers pages.
